News Cytotoxic drugs can increase cancer cell resistance

A standard treatment of ovarian cancer is the use of “platinum chemotherapy”, a treatment named so due to the platinum compounds contained in cytoxins. While an effective treatment, research conducted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science found that cancer cells will often develop a resistance to this treatment due to how the cytoxin can change the microenvironment around the cell and the cancer cell’s ability to sense signals in the environment that help them resist the cytoxin.
